What is Electronic Publishing?


Already firmly established in the consumer sector, electronic publishing is redefining the boundaries between print and digital, still image and video, passive and interactive. Modern digital workflows support almost any form in which content might appear, from traditional print to digital, web, video, and even interactive content. Building in the full spectrum of potential publishing avenues — print, web, video, mobiles and tablets, and interactives — from the beginning is not only a way to streamline production overall, but also to increase the reach of the materials produced by leveraging the content over a wide range of media. If the first revolution in electronic publishing was making publishing platforms accessible to anyone, the next phase is the linking of these platforms together to produce new combinations and new types of content. New concepts like the Online Scholarly Catalog Initiative (OSCI) and Responsive Design will allow that content to be easily archived as well as ported to any device.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • Electronic publishing transcends the traditional textbook, even when the textbook is in digital format. It can add options, content timely updates. However, one of the biggest drivers arrives as paper textbooks are no longer available (by publisher or district choice) and school districts remain obligated to provide the textbook electronically to students. Not only will this be a direct driver for connectivity and bandwidth, but also an indirect driver as districts opt for 1:1 deployments from a purely textbook need and then the utilization of the device for other purposes will also drive Internet bandwidth usage. - KSchwartz KSchwartz May 19, 2015- jmorrison jmorrison Jun 4, 2015
  • In addition to timely updates, digital publishing allows for alternative lenses. There is a push among several large districts (including Houston ISD) for standardization of digital content formats for interoperability (IMS Global/Common Cartridge) that will force the "chunking" of content to much more granular pieces than textbooks or even chapters. Interoperability with Learning Management systems will not only allow districts/schools/teachers to choose elements from different curricula, they can offer alternative content for the same learning goals such as different teachers presenting fractions via video, or different historical lenses, or different stances towards current issues such as climate change. This will also have implications on the market for niche or alternative content, including new formats such as simulations, games, and immersive environments.- marieb marieb May 26, 2015

  • We might want to consider the idea of granularization. The ability to pick and choose content is important for the personalization of learning. Some educational publishing companies have already begun to move in this direction. - jrwood272 jrwood272 May 20, 2015
  • Electronic publishing is also meaningful in the opposite direction: students creating and publishing content rather than simply consuming it. The trend towards quality work via writing for authentic audiences is hampered by unresolved issues in student and data privacy, but is evident as informal learning on platforms like fan fiction sites.- marieb marieb May 26, 2015

(3) What do you see as the potential impact of this technology on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry?

  • Higher quality materials. There may be a short-term disaggregation of publishers as the industry is disrupted by upstart electronic publishers, but it may also quickly re-condense to only a few major publishers who can deliver comprehensive, high-quality content and district move to fill the void of instructional materials. - KSchwartz KSchwartz May 19, 2015
  • Personalization - with interoperable content and resources and effective discovery tools, students themselves can be empowered to readily find relevant content, enabling a shift from content delivery to inquiry-based learning and self-directed learning. There are a number of pedagogical approaches that are generally described as student-centered that scale with technology and internet access by putting tools and power in the hands of students. For example, Inquiry based pedagogy invites students to create high quality questions and pursue high quality answers. Mastery-based learning allows students to achieve mastery as measured by specific standards at their own pace and supports the use of any content/materials that help the student achieve that mastery. Data-driven instruction can leverage educational content/resources that are designed to derive formative assessment data as a side effect of high quality digital student experiences. (4) Do you have or know of a project working in this area?

  • Clear Creek ISD and Houston ISD have major initiatives in this area to leverage 1:1 implementations. El Paso ISD is approaching this from the business case that providing notebooks to students is cheaper and better than issuing paper textbooks. - KSchwartz KSchwartz May 19, 2015
